Photography is my escape…
Like a lot of photographers, amateur or professional, my father leant me his Russian Zenth SLR when I was just a teenager. It sparked a big interest in photography. I later was given a Canon EOS 1000FN for one of my birthday’s and I later obtained part time job working at a high street photography shop and processor. I also gain experience working along side the resident photographer during the summer of a few weddings and the shop had a very small two light studio where I learnt some basic portrait photography. I completed some work experience working for a local newspaper, captured the vibes of the Kent County Show early in my photography journey. I’d also had a chance to photography the arrival of the Her Majesty Queen when she visited the local area in Kent.
But my career wasn’t in the world of photography, It was destine to be in television. I wanted to become a television cameraman. My career did pursue television, but with my technical mind and skills, I entered the world of broadcast engineering. I studied at Ravensbourne College, and took on a staff role at Visions / NEP UK. After 23 years at NEP UK and Nearly 30 years experience in television, I’m a successfully freelance broadcast and vision engineer, working of programmes and sporting events which are broadcast on all the major TV channels in the UK and on occasion all around the globe.
My photography therefore took a back seat, always being there, but dedicating just some of my spare time over the years to my creative endeavour. In 2005 I switched to digital, using the Olympus E300 - an 8 megapixel camera and later picked up the Lumix GF1, which I stall have today. I upgraded in 2011 to the Nikon D7000 which stayed in service right up until 2024. It has produced and still produces some incredible pictures. iPhone 6 and later versions also played a part in my photography, with some of my favourite images taken with various versions of this smart phone. My weapon of choice today is the OM System - OM5, using the existing lenses from the GF1 and my G100 which I purchased in recently as a bit of an experiment.
Over the years, my style has been mostly fair weather landscape and urban landscape photography. I’ve had a bit of a go at studio portraits too. In 2024 I discovered that I had flair for street photography, and this has really accelerated my journey in photography and has lead me to pursue this hobby more seriously.
Despite taking pictures for a little over 3 decades, I’m still learning new things. And in the whole scheme of things, I’m a beginner. Photography for me is a way to escape the worries of my world even if it’s for a brief moment. And without the support of my lovely wife, I wouldn’t be able to dedicate so much time to my career in broadcasting and photography.
