‘The Experienced Beginner’ is my first zine, born from a new chapter in my photographic journey. Although I have over two decades of experience behind the camera, street photography is a field I’ve only recently embraced — inspired by three photographers who have shaped how I now see and respond to the world around me.
Social media and, more importantly, a workshop with a fine art street photographer opened my eyes to the power of light, structure, and fleeting human presence in the urban landscape. This zine and it’s 24 images is the result of that learning: a collection of images where architecture and people meet, where the play of light becomes as important as the subject itself.
The photographs move between black and white and colour, from the familiar streets of London’s South Bank and Soho to the contrasting scenes of Paris and Baku. In each, I sought to balance composition and spontaneity — including people not as subjects in isolation, but as essential notes in the larger rhythm of the city.
This work is both a personal exploration and a record of growth. Even after 20 years in photography, I’ve discovered that there is always more to learn, and always a new way to see. The Experienced Beginner is my attempt to share that discovery.
